Partly why I stopped replying to that thread about FGM. Honestly, man, no one in real life has ever brought up the stuff people here seem so fixated about regarding our "image". I'm in the Boston area and like half the people I meet don't even know who Ilhan Omar is. That's how unclued into this shit the average person really is. The. Internet. Is. Not. Real. Life.

Please, kids, just go outside. Volunteer in your communities (animal rescue, masjid events, helping out at old people homes etc.), have weekend adventures with your friends, go on dates, work on your LinkedIns, GitHubs and career goals. Live fucking real life, please. It's so much more rewarding than this online garbage.

I'm mostly just dicking around during work breaks on here. Seems we misunderstood each other. Full disclosure: I did not even read your thread's OP. I wasn't responding to anything you posted but to what Saxiix posted and this site's general obsession with the Somali online image.

As in, when folks on this site go nuts over people "embarrassing us online" or ajanabis hating on Somalis on TikTok or internet stereotypes about Somalis; nobody cares about this in real life and you know it. I invaded your thread but my post had nothing to do with it.

Never has my ethnic background played a negative role in any of my social interactions when encountering new people. People don't even take note unless they rarely meet a Somali, where healthy, natural curiosity takes over the conversation.

The most typical reception is the other party saying they have a Somali friend, or saying something positive about the ethnic group as a whole, or relaying a story of a Somali they met who made a good impression. This is the cliche. I have never had anything negative thrown my way in that regard. Many times, it is a polite indifference. Most people are more about the substance they see in individuals, not what ethnic group they are part of. Your background is interwoven as a nuance once they get to know you, but it never takes a central stage.

You will get neutral to positive encounters, just don't make your whole personality your ethnic group. It comes off as goofy.

There is a strange paranoia plaguing these individuals. A mixture of low life balance, chronically online mindsets with little real-life social experience, and insufficient wisdom to appeal to is a bad combination. I also think many individuals here have deep ethnic insecurities where an inconsequential video hurts them like an old scar trauma. They have to grow thicker skin and distinguish real problems where issues can consequently occur from a source. Rather, they mistake senseless noise on the internet by bums as real issues. It can at best add to your perspective in a reasonable way where you know the limits (and mostly it only says about the ecosystem of internet dysfunction that has strong limits, rather than intergroup relationship status in the real world which is usually far too different from the echo-chambers of social media), not shape it.
