How can you be a moderate if you want to impose your interpretation of religion on other people? The only moderates are secularists. Secularism isn't about hedonism. It is about keeping the government out of religion because politicians will always abuse it. Look at the history of Islam. Muslims began killing each other as soon as the prophet died. The Ridda Wars happened in the caliphate of Abu Bakr

Bashar al Assad is a dictator who wants to stay in power, but he is heavily threatened which is why he has caused alot of bloodshed. Him having a secular government has nothing to do with that. Hell you can make him a Salafi, a Jew or a Buddhist with those ideologies being the basis of his government and his acts would still be unchanged.
