Islam does allow freedom of religion, non Muslims have lived under Muslim rule for centuries. They lived under Muslim rule as Dhimmis (protected people) and payed the Jizya (Small taxes), in return, they were allowed to practice their religion. The Ayat that talk about freedom of religion does not contradict the hadith to punish apostates, it simply means there's no compulsion to accept Islam, if you want to remain in your religion that's your choice. But to come to Islam and then leave Islam is a crime and under the Islamic legal system, the Muslim ruler would have him executed if convicted. He would be given a chance to repent for a period of time (3 days), they will ask him why he left Islam and they will try to bring him back to the fold of Islam, clarifying any misconceptions he has, if he refuses then he's to be punished by the ruler or his deputy, Qaadi or judge. So what we gonna do with the ayats that talks about the freedom of religion?![]()
