I was told by a friend of mine who has parents from Catalonia that Catalonia is the cash cow of Spain and Spain’s economy would suffer traumatically if Catalonia succeeds from Spain, how true is this?

Tbh a lot of Spanish regions have their own distinct culture but the ppl in Catalonia were oppressed by the racist dictator and are still triggered by it
:dead: They're exactly like us! That isn't the reason why they want to leave, they're of a different ethnicity, have a distinct culture, make more than the rest, are the most populous and pay between an additional 8 and 10 billion in federal taxes yet don't have funds allocated to them fairly for development among other things. Not because of some old dead guy. Although he did make things worse for them. And this got worse during the recession with austerity measures.

Isn’t it a autonomous state ? Tbh I don’t think most ppl in that region want to be separated but if they do I’ll be cheering them lol

Catalonia has it's own distinct language and culture. The Kingdom of Spain was created as a union between the crowns of Castille (Central Spain) and Aragon (Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia). The union wasn't smooth and civil war broke out which led to the Catalans fighting fiercely and retaining their traditional law and this theme repeated on numerous occasions.

Under Francisco Franco's fascist regime, Catalan writing and language was heavily repressed. The correct word for Spanish is actually Castilian since it was the native language of the core founding kingdom of Castille and it eventually was enforced on the other regions which have their own numerous dialects.

In Spanish the name is still interchangeable from Castellano (Castilian) - Espangol (Spanish)

In short these people want to separate as they've traditionally held great autonomy and are a distinct community. Spain which is a shadow of it's former superpower status, doesn't have much to offer Catalonia especially since the EU free trade area already exists. To answer your question, Madrid is the heart of Castille and what we perceive as Spain and spanish culture, it can never and will never leave.

@Mehdi Hassan please stop this SL stuff it's not the thread for it

Bro I know all this, they have more district culture but I'm talking about economics, Madrid keeps Spain alive just as much while being smaller.

Spain needs to address the economic rift between the regions like Italy( although they are having no success).
