I don't understand why would someone hold this individual to a high regard when taking into account the actions he had committed in the early 20th century.

You made statement saying "That is literally how the human race works, English people idolise slave owners etc" which is false given the fact that most people in Europe in those days were not well off nor did they benefit from a system of enslavement or colonization.
