How many Somali kids have undiagnosed mental illnesses do you think?

As we know mental issues are a real stigma in our community. Instead of actually getting to the root of the problem, Somali parents go for the Quran saar or some other jinn-related activities. I got diagnosed with ADHD (a big undiagnosed problem in the somali community) late in life and it probably stagnated me in a lot of fields. Autism is another one that is undiagnosed from a young age and I've seen many Somali kids with it and the mother really struggling with knowing what to do.

I've always thought that Somali psychiatrists/psychologists were in very short supply, it seems like such an essential service for the Somali community. More of them would help Somalis feel more comfortable with seeking help from them for themselves and their kids. It's mostly a fear that gaalo would indoctrinate their kid which is why they tend to have undiagnosed mental illnesses, which is sad

Here's the thing about mental illness however, I feel like the West has so many mental health problems compared to 3rd world countries.

Let's look at Somalia for an example, the kids their live in a bad environment, constant killings and bombings yet they're happy and they don't have these mental health issues that us in the west have.

Why does the west have so many mental health issues?

How do you know they're happy? There is no mental health services in Somalia. If there was, the story would be drastically different.

But to answer OP's question, it is a lot. There is a stigma. I remember a few kids being diagnosed with learning disabilities but the parents refused to get them help because they did not want to be labelled and didn't want their kid to feel bad.

Because I have family over there. One of my cousins who's American went to Somalia during the summer, and he said that overall, kids over their aren't as anxious/depressed as kids over here.

That doesn't mean that they don't have mental health issues, but the rate at which how many kids have these issues is lesser back in Somalia, then it is in the west.

That's why when parents see their Somali kids in the west with all these mental health issues, they're confused

That was the very definition of what happened to me. Hooyo was like ain't nothing wrong with my son despite every teacher saying this lil nigga can't concentrate for more than 3 seconds lol. Only when I went into higher education I was like this ain't normal for my brain to work like this. Turns out I had ADHD and had to get medicated for it. Changed my whole life no longer did it take me 3 hours to do something it would take someone 30min and a whole host of other shit too.

theres a lot of bipolar, depressed, adhd and autistic somalis out there undiagnosed too
some somali parents just assume you are possesed when their child has a mental disorder. my brother is bipolar and they tried to do quran saar like that was gonna help

Thats because our parents have their own undiagnosed issues relating to ptsd from the civil war etc... Wallahi some of our parents are suffering in silence and they don't even know it.

Some form of ritalin called xaggalin XL or something. If you think you have it check one of those online risk factors things that lets you know the symptoms of adhd. There is a lot of overlap with other illnesses. Adhd is no joke wallahi it takes over your whole life. You be thinking your lazy but no you just have a problem with your executive functioning that needs help. No weakness in admitting you need help.

If you have ADHD, don't take any drugs for it :jcoleno:

they're profiting off of you

I think i have ADD , my focus sometimes is shocking and the docs told my dad when i was a kid. I find it hard to sit and do work , but i can enter flow state for hours so idek. GPs in the uk are so shit now , it would be hard to get treated.

https://psychiatry-uk.com/

I didn't even go through GP. The waiting time was tooo long. Go through this site if you want you can pay for the initial assessment and then afterwards go through the right to choose method (they explain it on the site) so you can go through then for your medication and the nhs will pay. Instead of waiting for the gp long ass waiting list.

i disagree
In the west you will see well off people with respectable jobs talking to themselves and snapping.
Back home I have yet to see someone dressed smartly but crazy.

I think in the west we are looking for problems that are not there.
If a student fails an exam they claim dyslexia.
If a mother struggles with children it’s called post natal madness.
I think it’s the stress and the relentless need to exceed expectations that’s the root cause
