Take good care of yourself, and the rest will fall into place. It's rare to meet a below-average Somali, at least from those who grew up here.
Parents should encourage good grooming, hair styles and cooking habits in young boys from early on. Those are big differences I see in young Somali vis-à-vis African Caribbean (as an example). When I was a kid I use to use my sisters shampoo and wash my hair with extremely hot water because no one showed me otherwise. And my mother use to got annoyed whenever I grew my curly hair out. Our culture has way more of an emphasis on female grooming these days. Must be a modern thing , because those colonials who met Somalis saw sharp afros, obsession with white teeth and care about how a man looks. When I got into a makhaayad on a Friday- I notice or a lot of dry faces, sunburn and unhygienic teeth in older Somali males.
If there are any sisters with young boys here, I would advise them to be big on boys tidying their room from early on, cleaning dishes and learning to cook from a reasonable age.
