The early disasters at Benadir (Warsheikh/Lafoole) for Italy was considered akin to the great defeat at Adwa (Ethiopia). Nimoow on the Wacdaan coast was the first territory to be shelled by sea in retaliation. Italy kept a thin presence in Xamar/Marka/Baraawe for atleast 15 years because of their fear of the hinterland.

It was the height of Imperialism, his organisation SGI had a racist rhetoric of categorising Horners but did believe in Christendom to advance Menelik's goals, his death put an end to any Christian unity, you can sense it from the distance it created between Rome and SGI. Antonio is not remembered greatly in Italy, a prisoner who escaped from an Oromo queen whilst his more talented colleague died of malaria.

Bump. People often forget the struggles of the wacdaan cismaan, Geledi and Gaaljecel against the Italians. This should be the main focus of History textbooks in Somalia's curriculum. AUN General Galaal

Also, Sheihk Ahmed Gabyow AUN who was the first Somali to ever publicly call for Somali nationalism against the Italian colonists in late 1800's. His Son was the man who created the 1960 constitution and was a close advisor of Ali Mahdi AUN.

Sheikh Ahmed Abiikar [Gabyow] was born in the year of 1844, in the northern coastal city of Banaadir, called Adale. He was born in the neighborhoods of Haruur and Haji Al and came from a religious family background whereas his father’s name was Sheikh Abiikar Hassan and his mother's name was Aisha Sheikh Osman. He finished the holy Quran at mere 7 years old of age and thereafter started to study the religious books. Sheikh Ahmed had ten children; five daughters and five sons.

Why is he a significant person?

Sheikh Ahmed Abiikar [Gabyow] encouraged the people of Adale to fight the Italian colonialists. He composed patriotic poems in the early days of Italian colonial rule, that spoke about defending their lands against antagonists and kufr. He was actively opposing the Italian invasion of the Somali territory, and he urged his people to fight the Italian troops and was leading them. A battle in Adale was fought against the Italian troops and some of Sh Ahmed's famous poems are about his struggle against the European invaders, e.g. "Soomaaliyaan u dagaalamaynaa" which translates into “We are fighting for Somalia”.

“Soomaaliyaan u dagaalmaynaa,
Dalkeena baalaran u daafacynaa,
Kufriga soo dagay diida leenahay.
Kuwa dulmaaya la dood galaynaa,
Dantiina duul kale dhowrimaayee
Hadaalinoo u dulqaata leenahay
Dabeysha mowdku intuu i daadihin,
Hilibka duud cunin oonan deebna u noqon,
Dadka tus danahiisa aan leeyahay
Duruyadaada dab looma aasee
Kuwa dambaan u dariiq falaynaa”

This poem may have inspired the people of Warsheikh in 1890 to resist the Italian colonial rule and forced the withdrawal of Italian troops. The uprising resulted in the killings of two Italian officers, Zavaglio and Bertorello.

Sh Ahmed Gabyow passed away in 1933 in Adale.

At first the geledi sultan and many other clans in banadiir were reluctant to fight the italians but the resistance of the wacdaan aboubakar moldheer was so impressive, it inspired the other clans like the bimaal and forced the italians to give up control of hinterland and retreat to to the coastal cities. AUN to the mujahedeen of the banadir.
