you know... this raises an interesting issue.
According to my understanding, Sheikh Ibn Baz held the view that the Hindus can and should be forcibly converted.
However, I believe Sheikh Fawzan has expressed the view that this violates the verse about "no compulsion in the religion".
I'm not definitively sure which is the correct view from the purely Islamic standpoint but from a strategic standpoint I'm against it. I'm worried that force-converting them could lead to them becoming a fifth-column. In Spain after the fall of Al-Andalus, Spain tried to do force conversion of Muslims and Jews. And there was this concern among many of the Spanish, that many of these "new Christians" were actually just faking being Christians and they still believed in their prior religion (which in many cases was true). I think there should be a conquest and a massive dawah effort but I'm against force-converting the Hindu mushrikeen because I'm worried it would lead to a fifth column.

I think the Mughals sort of had no choice but to appease the Hindus. I think the Muslims were massively outnumbered and the Mughals had to somewhat appease the Hindus or they would have been overthrown.

Rashiduns, Ummayads and the Ottoman were also outnumbered but were able to convert the majority of people under them
I'm not sure as to all the details. I believe Spain was under the Ummayads (I think it was later independent of them). I'm not sure why India and Spain weren't converted, whether it was lack of will or lack of ability.

Thankfully the dharmic religions are on a decline due to a exodus of so-called untouchables. In Punjab alone it's estimated they're 15% Christian now after having been 1.5% Christian a decade ago. Many of them aren't officially converting on paper because they'd lose their low caste affirmative action benefits.
