Herpes 1 and 2

Some lady on the forum was warning ladies in January to test their men for STD. What she didn't know was that 1 in 6 Americans has HSV2 and most people in the world have Herpes 1. So there is a high chance of getting a man or woman with it. Accept the reality guys. Even Muslims get it. It can come from a spoon or any other contact, not just necessarily sex. No cure yet because the virus hides in nerves. Always use hand sanitizer whenever possible y'all.

An estimated one in five Americans have genital herpes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while 100 million have the HSV-1 virus that causes cold sores.

The CDC estimates there are a million cases of shingles every year in the United States alone.

"Time for some real talk about herpes before more people show up to this thread spreading misinformation and hysteria. Sorry to see that it's already occurred.

1 in 5 women in North America carry HSV-2, and for men the ratio is 1 in 6. It is said that up to 90% of people carry the HSV-1 virus (oral herpes, or cold sores), although they may or may not have symptoms. 81% of people with HSV-2 have no idea they carry the virus, because they're either asymptomatic or had one or two outbreaks that were so mild they were mistaken for ingrown hairs or a rash from laundry detergent or something.

If you have never specifically asked to be tested for herpes, or presented with symptoms (e.g. sores) at your doctor, then your STD panel almost certainly did not include an HSV-1 or 2 test. No joke. Lots of people who think they are "clean" may not be. The medical establishment has decided that herpes is generally so not a big deal -- in reality it's just a recurring skin condition, and for a great deal of people there's no symptoms whatsoever -- that they believe the psychological trade-off is not worth it. If you've had more than 5 sexual partners, even if you've used protection with all of them, it's likely you've been exposed to the virus (doesn't mean you caught it though). It's honestly a medical version of don't ask don't tell. This is from the CDC's own website:

"CDC does not recommend screening for HSV-1 or HSV-2 in the general population. Several scenarios where type-specific HSV tests may be useful include
  • Patients with recurrent genital symptoms or atypical symptoms and negative HSV cultures;
  • Patients with a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes but no laboratory confirmation;
  • Patients who report having a partner with genital herpes;
  • Patients presenting for an STD evaluation (especially those with multiple partners); [ed note: Even in this case you generally must ask for the herpes screening if you haven't had visible symptoms and/or a sexual partner with herpes]
  • Persons with HIV infection; and
  • MSM at increased risk for HIV acquisition.""

?? So your answer to that thread is a “But yeah there are other ways to get sick?”

Most men who have nothing to hide (and women) are more than happy to get tested, and would encourage it especially given that they care about their health and don’t want to risk catching a disease.

It’s the ones who bring up many reasons why they shouldn’t get tested that y’all need to worry about.

  • Herpes is extremely common, but most people with herpes never show symptoms (have an outbreak of lesions), and therefore don't know they have it
  • Herpes is not typically part of an STD screening
