Has anyone here successfully picked up a new language?

Thats a good question, I am sure if you searched some torrent sites you may find them

Arabic isn't to bad since a good portion of the language matches up with Somali so in away you have a head start
'Good portion'
The only thing somali will help with is some random loanwords that appear in our language from arabic. The rest of it does not help

I think you can do it with consistency, I've attempted both French and Arabic but was not consistent.
There's also tons of websites that can link you up with a language partner, I wouldn't put it off until being immersed in that culture but prepare so that you could make the best of the opportunity if it does come up.

English and Amharic, through immersion, technically:umad:.

Do you actually speak Amharic?
@black find a book with a clear plan, get the HelloTalk app and watch shows on Youtube. Then you are sorted.

I'm probably going to go down that root, looking for decent Arab dubbed shows. It's going to be so painful lol. My mum used to watch the Arab dubbed Turkish dramas, it looked atrocious :mjlol:

I tried to learn Russian at some point; I managed to memorize a few phrases...most of which I don't remember due to the lack of frequent use. Only thing I retained was how to read the Cyrillic alphabet.:manny:
loool even I learned how to partly read the Cyrillic script for literally the dumbest reason. :mjlol: Any particular reason you chose Russian?

I learned german by accident
lol mate, you're gonna have to explain that one

Yeah, I'd like to get the basics down before actually staying there. I really wanted a few month stay in Morocco regardless, but apparently their Arabic is barely considered Arabic. A lot of mixture with Southern European and I think the native Amazigh languages. Which sucks, since none of the other Arab countries are particularly appealing to me

lol that's actually brilliant. I remember when I was around 8 I was stuck with German satellite channels for a few months. I completely forgot about that. Perhaps I could've picked up more, and maybe I did some. Though I could already understand the gist of most written sentences since I speak Dutch.

How come? I thought you were Tigrayan. Did you get the bush treatment for misbehaving? :mjlaugh: Mum and dad afraid you were going get recruited by London 'gangs'? :mjlaugh:
