Has anyone here successfully picked up a new language?

I'm interested in learning Arabic, but I'm very skeptical about the amount of progress I can make without actually immersing in an Arab-speaking country. Not to mention the whole standardized vs local dialect predicament.

Anyway, how did you go about learning a new language?

Try watching subtitled Arabic shows, maybe.

Then again I watch anime and can't speak Japanese

Do you know if they dub modern shows like GoT, BB etc. in Arabic? I wouldn't mind trying it and then sticking on an English sub file. I don't feel like it would help too much though

Thats a good question, I am sure if you searched some torrent sites you may find them

Arabic isn't to bad since a good portion of the language matches up with Somali so in away you have a head start

I learned Turkish via Duolingo(and watched a couple TV series),I'm currently going through the Duolingo Brazilian Portuguese course and French course

What language were you trying to learn?

My language of choice was Spanish in order to to make my resume more marketable to employers unfortunately it turned out being a waste of time and money.

English and Amharic, through immersion, technically.

I used that too for French lol, the only thing that seems to work with me.

@black find a book with a clear plan, get the HelloTalk app and watch shows on Youtube. Then you are sorted.

I tried to learn Russian at some point; I managed to memorize a few phrases...most of which I don't remember due to the lack of frequent use. Only thing I retained was how to read the Cyrillic alphabet.
