Has any here met a somali with aspergers instead of low functioning autism?

Is it about the skin tone when African Americans have a lower autism rate than Whites?

I read one study saying that Somalis don't have much higher rates of autism than Whites. According to the paper, it is such that when Somalis get it, it is more severe, and the mental problems generally might become more noticeable in those statistically close comparative group-based autism rates. This leads to higher detection rates as well, if the findings are correct:

"Results indicated that Somali (1 in 32) and White (1 in 36) children were about equally likely to be identified with ASD, but more likely to be identified with ASD than Black and Hispanic children. Somali children with ASD were significantly more likely to have an intellectual disability than children with ASD in all other racial and ethnic groups."

I need a source for that if you can provide. Thanks.

It sounds to me out of all demographics (that are descended from a hotter climate) are subjected to autism because of their lack of vitamin d; but Somalis out of all black or brown demographics are vulnerable to autism.

Isn’t it surprising where Somalis that are subjected to autism happens to be sitting in the most coldest places in western countries?

Somalis that remains in the coldest states (Minnesota) are said to have higher rates of autism than other demographics (compare to those from a minority groups).

We are prone to autism due to environmental and genetic factors, but you're right it's linked with vitamin D deficiency and microbiome, Somalis in the west don't have the best diets.

Developmental vitamin D (DVD)-deficiency is an epidemiologically established risk factor for autism. Emerging studies also highlight the involvement of gut microbiome/gut physiology in autism. The current study aims to examine the effect of DVD-deficiency on a broad range of autism-relevant behavioural phenotypes and gut health. Vitamin D deficient rat dams exhibited altered maternal care, DVD-deficient pups showed increased ultrasonic vocalizations and as adolescents, social behaviour impairments and increased repetitive self-grooming behaviour.

Environment is one thing; but I’m also looking at anemia “Iron deficiency”.

Somali mothers (not all) are subjected to FGM which effects and down plays their production of iron.

Women that goes through this mutilation process are bound to lose a lot of blood.

As I’ve already addressed this from my original post:

Another theory is -it could be FGM: most Somali mothers are subjected to this tradition which leads them to have Anemia (low iron).

When Women are pregnant they need to retain a healthy blood. Having low iron could lead to an unhealthy development for the newborn

The quoted part came from Mohamed, Z. A., et al. (2022).

"About 78,846 of them live in Minnesota, the largest Somali diaspora community in the US. In this population, the incidence of ASD is 1 in 32, not statistically different from that of white children; 1 in 36, but significantly higher than among black American and Latino children which were 1 in 62 and 1 in 80 respectively."

The aspect about me saying it might be that they are detected earlier might be wrong since the same source claims this:

"... were generally diagnosed much later than white children."

I merely asked since sources claim that Black Americans, a population that is genetically sub-Saharan African, meaning they are hot-climate tropical adapted and have lower autism rates than Whites (a demographic with lower vitamin D deficiency rates, as they are adapted to environments with less sun exposure), do not show similar trends as Somalis.

Autism is a complex issue, and vitamin D might have something to do with it. It could be that genetically, D vitamin deficiency might cause autism in Somalis, while lack of D vitamin does not cause the same reaction in African Americans. They are mostly West African-derived and not from East Africa -- a potentially relevant factor that can further highlight that they have different constitutional profiles that protect against the issues facing Somalis in these so-called "autism clusters." But the link you sent also claimed it was merely a hypothesis pending tangible results since the underlying processes are unclear.

By the way, the link you sent reaffirms that Black and Hispanic levels are lower than Whites:

"Its first report, released in February 2007, found that the prevalence in 2002 of autism spectrum disorders among white non-Hispanic children ranges from 3.3 to 12.5 for every 1,000 children. For black non-Hispanic children, the prevalence is slightly less, ranging from 3.4 to 7.7 per 1,000, though itʼs unclear whether thatʼs an indication of lesser access to special education and healthcare services, or a true difference between races."
