Hargeisa Mayor Mooge says in the near future, Somalis will urbanise into one city.

Mayor Mooge could be onto something, but I believe Somalis will urbanize in multiple cities that will receive heavy foreign investment, and offer economic opportunities, quality education, quality healthcare, good infrastructure, amenities, and a high quality of life with access to utilities and services.

I guess Mayor Mooge factored in the current unemployment rates, and the limited job opportunities, agricultural challenges, natural disasters etc that could drive people into urbanised cities.

He seems like a competant man.

That’s what was happening in the 70s and 80s Somalis we’re urbanizing in xamar and southern Somalia enmass
There was a lot of incentives to urbanise back then. The only reason many cities and towns propped up is because everyone dispersed after the war. Imagine how big Xamar would've looked like now if stability remained intact.

God forbid it. That's what killed us in 91. Never put your eggs in one basket.
Maybe only this time around it would be smart if there was be multiple cities people could urbanise to.

I also think he's speaking of a time in the future where distrust between somalis has been reconciled and tribalism is not as rife as it is now.

I agree xamar would probably have a bigger population then Nairobi or addis if that were the case

The good thing now is that development is spread out through the gobols instead of being concentrated in the south

African cities have no economies of scale. African cities are in essence large villages, there are almost no advantages from agglomeration in Africa. This is why bigger cities like Hargeisa and Mogadishu still have quality of life similar to that of Qardho or worse in the case of Mogadishu.

Urban economic growth in Africa: A framework for analyzing constraints to agglomeration
Saying Addis Abeba, Lagos, Cairo, Algiers, Nairobi etc. are on par with villages is ridiculous. Xamar has highest HDI in Somalia already. It has best universities, hospitals, entertainment, factories exporting processed agricultural goods are popping up every few months. And the city has recently obtained a decent tourism industry bringing in foreign exchange into its economy.

I have always felt this but i didn’t know how to word it .I feel like a developed town in Europe is more efficient than a big city in Africa.

Xamar is comparable in HDI to all of Bari (urban and rural). Urban Bari (Bosaso & Qardho) would have higher HDI than Xamar.

I’m talking about Subsaharan Africa. Yes, Nairobi is a glorified village and so is Addis Ababa. These are not cities but dense concentrations of people. The differences in development between urban and rural Africa are small.
