The last two times Israel got in a fistfight with Lebanon they lost immediately and went and beat up on Gaza to take out their frustration.

Everything about the current situation reminds me of the Tet Offensive. Even if Israel does a clean sweep and executes every Hamas infiltrator, this is the most humiliating thing to happen since they tried invading Lebanon again. Multiple IDF soldiers captured and brought back to Gaza, armed militants patrolling the streets and battling Israeli cops, the rockets are doing some actual damage this time. Hamas has been preparing for this attack for quite a while. They're calling it the "Al-Aqsa Flood" so it's obvious what spurred this on.
