Yep, it looks fake almost, but that is what downtown Grozny looks like. Surprisingly modern.
Some background info on Chechnya. In the 90s/early 2000s there was a war between the Chechens and Russia. Chechens are a Muslim minority group in Southern Russia near the Caucasus.
Putin first crushed them in a war and then bought out the Chechen leadership in exchange to stop the riff-raff. They received a lot of money and development in return.
The ethnic Russian/Orthodox population went down from +20% before to less than 2% in recent years.
Looks like it was a win-win for both.

Actually they continuously beat the Russian army down in Chechnya with IEDs, ambushes and trapped vehicles. That was in the first Chechen war the Russian got their heads kicked in. It was only in the second Chechen war where Russia practically flooded Chechnya with soldiers and bombed Grozny to dust that they lost. Under 7000 Chechen and foreign mujahideen beat 75,000 Russians in the first Chechen war, Russians were absolutely seething.

The Chechen wars were brutal. The Russians morale was low, they were horribly prepared and people didn't really want to attack their own citizens. They were shoving new conscripts into this and letting them go to the meat grinder
