It's not just gold but emeralds and other precious rocks.
When Puntland push Jeegaan out of Bari sanaag, we stop hearing gold mining!!.Supposedly there's an illegal mining operation going on in Awdal. To be honest, same thing happened in Sanaag few years back with the gold rush there. There was a lot of shady brokers.

We advice reer awdal to kick jeegaan out their lands.

Most of the mining is done by those who own the land or who rent out the land they own, Awdal is self-governed mostly by itself, and large majority of the land is owned by individuals or groups.

It’s mostly a group of Reer Maxamed, Samaroon who are involved in the mining operations in Baki. Those guys are caking.
Local Reer Maxamed are upset because they’re not sharing the riches.

The Simoodi mining company is Reer Maxamed. The other subclans are upset because they feel they're being sidelined. There are 2 other companies, one which is Chinese and the other one which is Saudi but they're not operational
