What did older Somalis really gain from free-mixing with men? Didn't they all end up being hooyos who taught their daughters to be careful of men?

Women should be afraid of men, not all men, but a good chunk. If we consider the fact that most women have encountered perverts or know someone who has been assaulted, molested or sexually harassed by a man.

Ideally women and men interact with each other politely and when necessary, but the male gender has too many disordered beings for that to be realistic. Gender segregations/mahrem is to protect women from these kind of beings. Even when they are 'courting' girls, I think they need to be supervised, investigated and grilled by their own gender who can read through their bullshit.

Women are harmed more by men than they are harmed by wild animals, but we've been taught to think it's extreme to be careful of men, when our own creator, Allah SWT, has guidelines for how to interact with them.

I think women only cafes are fine and not extreme. Women are valid in their feelings of cautiousness. I think you misunderstood me. Somalis have a lot of cross-gender friendships. Nothing to deep as actual courting, just talk amongst friends. And I think such things are good in the somali community. South asians have a lot of strict gender segregation but that seems to have only worsened their dehumanization and treatment of women.

What is Qaladized? Qalad as in wrong?

This is the first I'm hearing of gender separated housing. Is this still common today amongst wealthier families?

I can see this being appreciated amongst hijabis. I hear people visit other houses freely so hijabis might appreciate it.

Would make sense if true. Somalis have nor decorum when it comes to alerting people of their arrival. They just show up

Being around men you're not married or related to, is actually overrated. I've been to gender-segregated places in arab countries, and let me tell you, it's amazing. Blissful even. And quiet as its kept, a lot of women feel much happier and safer without non-mahrems around.

In an ideal world, all men are well-behaved, but we live on earth, and nobody wants to look over their shoulder 24/7.

I want to see more women women-centric places everywhere on earth.

If people want Somali restaurants/Somali cuisine to become popular then yes, they need to get rid of separate seating. I guess it can work if they stick to only appealing to muslim customers but if they want non-muslim appeal then it has to go. I don’t think it’ll be complicated tbh I’ve never seen genuine segregation. They can have normal seating + separate seating for muslims who want it. I’ve been to Somali restaurants in places where there are barely any Somalis and the seating is always mixed because the place is typically tiny. Those hole in the wall places that are usually frequented by truckers are the best imo

I was thinking of this. You need to cater to the people that live amongst you. Gender segregated seating is sure to turn a few heads away. Even other Muslim demographics don't have this in their stores.

Exactly. Gender segregation can further cause dehumanization of women rather than uplifting them. A man with no morals will not respect womens spaces.

because somali men tend to hang out at cafes in large groups without their families, and they make it intimidating for female customers. Has anyone ever walked through the male dominated cafés? it's like you walked into the shark enclosure
