The name Garbahaareey is originally Somali. There are many small towns and cities scattered across the Somali peninsula with the same etymology. For instance, there is a small village called Garbociise between the towns of Dhagaxbuur and Jigjiga, and one town bordering Deganka Canfarta. Additionally, in DDS, there are many towns containing the name Haarreey.

The Oromo and Somali languages share many words. Many old Somali words are still used by modern Oromo speakers, while modern Somalis have also adopted different words, so the old Somali words are not exclusive to Oromo; rather, Oromo speakers have preserved their original meaning. For example, in Oromo, the word for "face" is "fuula," while we use "waji." Interestingly, the word "fool," which has the same meaning as "fuula," is only found in phrases and has been abandoned by modern Somali speakers.

So, Why do many people say that cities such as Gaalkacayo, Garbahaareey, Hargeisa, Boorama, and Jigjiga were originally Oromo? It was started by a non-Somali person whose name I cannot recall, spreading false information and calling Somalis invaders. Unfortunately, some people with limited critical thinking skills have also been spreading this false information. We should not perpetuate this false narrative about our history. From a linguistic perspective, we share many things, including the Oromo, Somali, Canfar, and other groups.".
