Futuh Al-Habesh

He was definetly not darood, hawiye or isaaq, The marexan was his soldiers but had their own ugaas, If ahmed gurey was marehan he would also be the ugaas of the marehan, He lived to much up in the north, The only logical explanation is that he is dir he was settled in zeyla a entirely dir city thorghout the ages and had his first support from zeyla, He was possibly from a small dir clan without any political importance but was very religiously influential clan,

This explains why he ammassed such a large following from diverse clans, If he was from a large clan it would envolve him in to much blood feuds which would hinder him from significant support, He had support by basically all somali clans in his periphery and some were even far from his homestead,
He was ably to rally support through religion probably due to his clans respected religious clout, All somali clans have a subclan known for its religious teachers and they are more respected then any other qabilwithin the federation of clans including qabils known for warriors, Look at macalinweyne with rahanweyn, sheekhal and others. Even though sheekhal allied themselves with usc they generally didnt not get touched by darod militias because of their religious virtuosity

Ahmed Gurey was from Hubat, not Zeila. He was a Balaw from Hubat, which is Karanle then and now. That region is settled by Hawiye clans and the book says his father was Balaw.

Balaw are mostly around the massawa area and seem to claim descent from arabs, How would he be a hawiye and then, Their absolutely no chance that a non dir would become a imam in zeyla

Balaw is a sub-clan of Sexawle Karanle that live in Hubat, both in the book and today and they are Hawiye Somalis. We're not talking about Massawa.

He was never the Imam of Zeila.

Oh ok does the book say that we was a member of this so called hawiye subclan? How did he amass such support then? And only within muslim community?, He was a not a real imam of zeyla but had a very high standing in zeyla almost in the same level of the imam since i think the imam position in zeyla was weakened during this time

Yes, it says his fathers clan.

"Returning to his country, Sultan Muhammad was murdered by his in-law Muhammed bin Abu Bakre bin Mahfuz, a prominent person in the country, who ruled the country after him for one year. Then, Muhammad bin Abu Bakre bin Mahfuz was in turn murdered. His killer was Ibrahim bin Ahmed, ruler of the country of Hubat of the tribe of Balaw, a prominent person in the country who ruled the country for three months. 52"

He has in high standing because he was the defacto leader of Adal as a whole, not Zeila only, he was from Hubat and based in that region in Harar. There was a lot of infighting before he consolidated power.

Read the book.

He was definitely darood sxb majority of army was darood why would a dir man lead a whole army wich is not from his qabil even his right hand man was a marehan

If it says in the book that he was hawiye why are you disputing it, The book was written around when he was waring against the habesh, By a author who may knew him

Which country are they reffering to, Did ahmed gurey only lead during three months in adal and then went to wage war and died as we know, Or was he once ruler of hubat only in three months

The Imam declared a jihaad and that's how he got the Somali clans to rally behind him. Each clan had a leader and fighters who came to help defend what was then considered Muslim land.

I think we make a mistake when we look back at the past with the same lenses as today's society.

Things were very different back then, including clans and their configurations. It is very likely that some of the clans we take for granted today did not even exist back then.

Islamization was a key part in forming the Somali identity.

Whatever his clan, or whether he was Somali or not, the Imam was seen as a Muslim leader and that is how he derived his legitimacy to go to war with the non-Muslims.

Him being Muslim is known and expected but the ethnicity is very important for us Somalis. Imam Ahmed is the greatest hero in Somali history. In recent times a lot of non Somali Muslims in the Horn have been attempting to hijack this figure which is problematic. We need to be protective of our history
