As part of moves to enhance its military and economic ties in Ethiopia, France has agreed in a new deal to help the landlocked country to build a navy.

The accord was signed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday.

“This unprecedented defence cooperation agreement provides a framework… and notably opens the way for France to assist in establishing an Ethiopian naval component,” Macron, who was on a four-day visit to Ethiopia, told a news conference

A landlocked country with a navy... Is there such a thing? What are they going to do ride their ships through a lake? :drakelaugh:

Russia isn’t landlocked
Yes
To the West the only access that they have to the sea is thru the Baltic sea and the. Black sea both of which can be blocked very easily.
To the North is the artic ocean which is mostly frozen so it's useless. In the far east they have the. Port of Vladivostok which is the gateway to the pacific ocean which is useless

Pacific Ocean is more important due to trade with US China and Japan which are the biggest economies, with the rest of Europe they can just trade with trucks or by rail

Trade? Russia is a OIL/GAS economy... Europe-facing ports such as Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg were historically ice-locked for part of the year before the advent of the icebreaker in the 20th century .

none of these ports, even when open for business, allow for easy access to the bustling Mediterranean Sea. This has left Russia with an economic and military incentive to expand toward warmer waters.

Russia fought a series of wars with the Ottoman Empire in a quest to establish a warm-water port off the Black Sea. Russia had managed to secure control of the entire northern coast of the Black Sea.

at the end of the day Russia isn’t landlocked, of course but the ports they have aren't strategic
