One of the comments says "all Somali clans are descended from Hiil (maternally or paternally) , and Hil was qurash, conveniently this means Somalis don’t have to pay taxes in Muslim countries, which knowing Somalis is probably why that myth came about".

What tax are they talking about?

Of course, it's fake for the most part. Lineages start with Arabic names and clans are full of different haplogroups.
Clans are very much real. There's the core group and then some assimilated subclans. MJ is real. Darood is and so is hawiye. Dir(Cisse, samaroon and surre) are real from the tested samples

Its real I would say, however the starting point may be distorted. I think the forefathers of the major clans arent arab however they were most likely real. Like the ones that supposedly came over from arabia or other landmasses outsiders of africa (all 4 major clans claim this) may just have been somali merchants that studied in those lands then came back. Or they couldve been mixed with an Arab mother and a Somali father. Either way I dont think paternally they are arab themselves.

I think a lot of clans mightve been absorbed into larger clans as well. I mean even if clan isnt real, its about to be real since that is what Somalis have strongly identified with for hundreds of years now.

Its a bit like clash of clans:drakelaugh:

Edit: (this is all just opinion not fact)

I mean it is known that people have been assimilated into tribes. Plus the Yibir 'hebrew' myth is entirely untrue

The ethnicity "Somali" isn't even real if you lay out the entire lineages of all "Somali" peoples. Growing up, I always thought that it was impossible for an "ethnic" group to occupy a landmass as huge as Somaliweyn. Think about it, qabil is real but the way qabil is used to trace lineages is fake and bs.

More likely to have studied in Arabia and then come back, the cities of Harar and Zeila have a strong connection to Islam dating back to the early 7th century.

We descend from two male lineages and have pretty much mostly intermarried with eachother for a couple of thousands of years. If we’re not a ’real’ ethnic group, no group on the planet is.

Don’t know what to believe but if the people have been claiming it orally for a thousand years then there must be some truth to it and some falsehoods mixed with it . Some obvious falsehoods like our forefathers being Arab

Now you saying Somali is not real ethnically is not believable and I’m pretty sure dna can back that up too .

Somali is a real ethnic group minus the Bantu and Admixed Somalis who are outliers. Note that an ethnic group doesn’t not mean all members of the group have to descend from one lineage. It also possible for an agro pastoralist group with a large nomadic base to settle across large distances. The land settled by Somali sub clans is bigger than many nations in the world.
