TRENDING NEWS Former US secretary regrets not recognising Somaliland

According to Wikileaks Ethiopia tried to advice Somaliland getting its case reviewd by African Union and possibly given an observer role in mid 2000s

Kahin ignored the advice and proceds to deliver a speech begging for recognition.

The Somaliland government under Dahir Kahin should have persuaded Ethiopia and the world that in exchange for recognition SL and Ethiopia would undertake EU style integration with one another. SL should have said to Meles "mislead Ethiopians that SL is looking to be a part of Ethiopia but in practice only EU style integration would be the most we're willing to accept"

There was a AU fact-finding mission to Somaliland back in 2005 and in the resume it stats:

"The fact that the "union
between Somaliland and Somalia was never ratified" and also malfunctioned when it went into went into action from 1960 to 1990, makes Somaliland's search for recognition historically unique and self-justified in African political history."

This is what happens when a dumb faqash yout reads a snippet and doesn't understand the context.

The AU was invited by the same government to Somaliland on a fact finding mission and wrote favourably about its recognition

My man tried to pull another Siad Barre in the middle of Isaaq city. :russ:

Oh so first it I was me making shit up and now I'm not understanding the context. The context is very clear which is a path for Somaliland to gain recognition or semi recognition statues. Take it up with ina Kahin.

None of what your posting aligns with what you said you dumb yout and it's not contextualized at all. After the meeting with the US, Dahir invited the AU team to Somaliland which is when they carried out the AU fact finding mission in Somaliland. Maybe if you read that document you would understand and be able to contextualize instead of posting random snippets and forming your own narrative

If the two sides don’t agree or it eventually leads to conflict, the IC will support a referendum which southern government will have to accept the results.
The IC doesn't give a damn. As long as western interests are protected nobody cares if SL is independent or not. They are happy with the status quo, the west doesn't want to create instability by recognizing a break away state but at the same time they can do their interests in Somalia and SL.
Everybody is happy with the status quo, even Somaliland and Somalia are ok with it. Nobody cares as long as they can eat the wealth of the somali people

The reason why the west doesn’t recognize Somali land is simple

IC doesn’t have a huge stake at the moment, that’s true. But once armed conflict starts between somaliland and FGS the matter will have to be settled to avoid instability in the region. A stable horn Africa is in the interests.

It's not going to happen.
Fgs has no capability of waging war on Somaliland and even if they had a chance why would they do it? FGS would need a lot of resources, tanks, aircrafts etc to even have a chance. Fgs isn't like abiy Ahmed's ethiopia who conquered tigray in one month

Yes then somaliland will get recognition via diplomacy. Either way it will happen eventually.

No, that is called reaching.

AU send the FF team and concluded that Somaliland's case is unique and won't open Pandora's box. So why did they not recognize Somaliland?

Because, as Wikileaks shows, government went about it the wrong way. Instead of pressing for a time frame to include Somaliland case in AU agenda headed at that time by a president more accommodating to your case, Kahin went ahead with standard "begging for recognition" route.

It is rather simple and straightforward. This contextualize excuse is another tactic to cover Somaliland's inept foreign policy.
