Just found out two of my 3rd female cousins living in dijibouti are getting circumsised, I forgot this still happens in Somali culture.
I'm trying to stop them from doing this to them. I gave them adivse. But they are way to cultured to accept my facts.

It's illegal there so try reporting them to the authorities

Try speaking to them about the health dangers of FGM, lack of sexual feeling it will cause and the religious side to it. Can you get your mum to talk to their mum also ? This might be the most effective way to stop it.

Inform them of:

1) Being potentially infected with diseases, such as hepatitis, HIV, herpes, genital warts, etc.
2) Having urinal infections & trouble of the vulva in passing menstruation
3) The risk of death during pregnancy
4) Little to no stimulation & senses during sexual activities
5) The deep insecurities that will arise from a disfigured labia

Try to find videos of victims of FGM explaining their tragic stories & send it to them on WhatsApp or another messaging app

Its illegal in most countries. But unless their are convictions for the FGM practitioners and parents it will continue.

Yup looks like those laws are there for decoration. Couldn't find a single case In Djibouti or Somalia where someone was prosecuted. Its like that in most African countries

I think there will always be victims of FGM. I mean how many girls would turn in their parents or runaway if they don't want it done to them ? I think the police would in most cases side against the victim too.

In Somali culture parents are seen as saints and even if they are in the wrong they are never challenged on this.

Is it by choice
