Feminist Misuse of the Story of Khawla (May Allah Be Pleased with Her)

Some feminist academics completely misuse the famous story of Khawla bint Tha’laba (رضي الله عنها).

The gist of Khawla’s story is that her husband swore never to have sex with her again. This was a problem as the oath was binding. Khawla explained her predicament to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet ﷺ said that the oath was binding, but Khawla “complained” and persisted in her “complaints” about her situation as she really loved her husband. She made dua to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to reveal a solution, and that is what eventually happened.

So, what do some liberal feminists take out of this story? They like how Khawla “complained” and did not give up until her problem was resolved. Some feminists even have the gall to liken Khawla to Amina Wadud, who also “complains.” Just sheer stupidity, really.

What these academics fail to note from the story of Khawla is that:

- The Prophet ﷺ did not compromise and twist revelation to resolve Khawla’s problem. Rather, it was only when he received divine revelation that he was able to assist Khawla. All her “complaining” did not sway the Prophet ﷺ to concoct some ruling to appease her.

- Khawla herself understood that she had to obey divine revelation. She knew that the Prophet was still receiving revelation, hence why she made dua to Allah to reveal a solution for her. Her moral standard aligned with what divine revelation stated; she did not just conjure up her own solution out of selfish desire.

Now, tell me, do feminists really have Khawla’s mindset or not? Or are they merely interested in admiring women who “complain” to men?
