I think because Barre didn’t want to anger the Soviets by outright refusing Castro’s idea, so he asked for the Somali parts of the Horn to be together under the federation. In hindsight it didn’t matter as they still backed Ethiopia.

Lol. @Shimbiris do you think we fumbled the bag? If this Russia of Africa happened then we would be a superpower on the Red Sea. With a 500 billion GDP and growing while sitting on a trillion dollar shipping lane in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. We would be having the African Dubai in this Federation. And be holding the seat of the African Union leader on our hands. Even if it didn’t work we would have had all of our Somali regions back. Galbeed, Somali region of Djibouti, and we could’ve lobbied for NFD in Kenya and simply secede when the federation went south.
