far wadaad script

The ana carabs get on my nerves but they do have a point in saying that using the Arabic script would better than the Latin script. According to USAID, Somalia's youth literacy rate is ~13%. If we adopted the Arabic script that would be much higher considering the fact that everyone from those in the baadiye to those in the city all study Quran. We'd probably have one of the highest literacy rates on the entire continent if we used the Arabic script. That would have a huge impact on our productivity as a country

The only thing is we'd have to modify the script a bit to fit our language, kind of like what the Persians did. Casual Arabic isn't written with the harakaat, but native Arabic speakers can still figure out what the words mean by the context of how the words are being used. Arabic is an Abjad language. That means it is a language where all the letters are consonants and vowels are represented through things like harakaat. Most semetic languages are like this including Hebrew. Somali isn't a language that uses Abjad alphabets so if we used the Arabic script we would have to develop our own letters to represent the short vowels like Fathah, Kisrah, and Dammah

My inner nationalist would prefer Osamanya over a modified Arabic script, but if we're being practical the Arabic script would be the best one for us to use

Somalis convincing three hundred million Arabs that we are Arabs too despite not speaking a word of Arabic is our biggest flex. It’s like Ethiopians convincing ignorant west Africans that they’re “only free African country” despite being colonizers and collaborating with the white colonists

I never thought about it that way
:ohhh:
Joining the Arab League is one of the few things the Kacaan government did right

glad it died off. Latin saved our language from arabic sneaking in thanks to wahabis
We need something in between not as crazy as wadaad or latin, but somthing in btwn. Like a modern Osmanya or modified latin

The overwhelming majority of Somalis disagree with you.
we have a culture that is quite vulnerable to arab culture..... , especially in this modern age in the past far wadaad was excellent but we should keep this language going for a century or two more atleast.

I doubt most somalis are long term thinkers but history tends to agree that scripture can heavily influence or even change the language if there is massive social change or upheaval AKA (modern internet , foreign media and agents) or in medival times (conquest). Unfortunately the best we got is latin.
