That's the Hanafi school of thought. However, there are legitimate sahih hadiths that tell us:

In one of the Hadith, Allah's Messenger the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “A marriage contract is not valid without a wali.” So, this Hadith clearly says that to make the Nikah valid, the presence of Wali is one of the necessary conditions.

Even within the Hanifi school of thought a woman marrying off herself is disliked and is discouraged, especially when you have sahih hadith that say such a union is invalid. Also, when she does, society along with her family should still know about her marriage. This is clearly not the case in this situation.

Another thing, Somalis who engage in Qurbo siro aren't doing it to follow the Hanifi rulings as most Somalis in nearly every matter are either Shafi/or Hanbali Salafi. They're doing it to simply safisfy their desires. They get into haram relationships that parents/society have no idea about and then simply label it a marriage. Its shameful.

The lady had two kids from her previous husband. She was a single mother. Barkhad ran into her because she was a reporter. A relationship ensued. He knocked her up. She had the child and then threw the child away by setting the child right front a random house. However, she forgot to remove the sticker on his naivel (an identifier when the baby is in the maternity ward ). When authorities were called they discovered the maternity hospital. Hospital looked into their records and revealed the mother. The mother was arrested. Her family was notified. Her family demanded to know the father. She told them the father was the RISING SL POLITICIAN who received the most votes in the last elections. Her family is from a respected calm. Barkhad is from the low caste discriminated clan of Somalia. The family told him to pick up his child after the mother is done breastfeeding for just a year.
