Remembering the slaughter in Borama 1984

On the 30th January 1984, something terrible occurred in the sleepy little town of Borama. It was almost six years after the Somali led attempt of liberating the occupied Somali territories in Ethiopia. The horror of war was almost but forgotten in this Somali town situated in the Northern Awdal region. The early morning seemingly looked like any other morning. Parents fed their children and dressed them up for school. Teachers planned their schedules and were always there to teach their students. However this morning was not like any other. Around 10 AM the schools in Borama, along with other civilian infrastructure were mercilessly attacked. The Ethiopian war planes targeted four elementary schools, including the Hawo Tako middle school. Four parents were immediately killed, all of them were mothers.


In total, there were 37 dead children in the age group between six and fourteen years old. As well as four dead teachers, 5 injured teachers and 39 injured children. The devastation and the sight of burned bodies were horrifying. There was absolutely no military strategy behind this cruel inhumane crime, other than to spread fear of course. It was a deliberate targeting of civilians, and could constitute a war crime. As the Ethiopian savages are still committing atrocities on both sides of the border, i believe it is important we dont forget these barbaric actions. Children no matter what country dont deserve to be robbed of their lives and those that commit such actions should be held accountable. It has since been precisely three decades, and i feel there should be more Somalis aware of these crimes. Because of that reason, i have here an informative list of the child victims names, ages as well as their grade levels. If you want to learn more, you can check out this great page. I honor these innocent Somali children, teachers and parents through spreading their story that has sadly been almost forgotten.

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Ethiopian fighter planes staged an air strike deep into Somalia, killing four children in the second cross-border raid in 24 hours, reports from Somalia said.

Somali anti-aircraft batteries drove the Ethiopian aircraft off in both encounters Thursday and Friday, state-run Radio Mogadishu said.

The Somali army is equipped with shoulder-fired American Red-eye missiles, which were introduced into the country during the July 1982 invasion of Somalia by Ethiopian forces.

Radio Mogadishu, monitored in Nairbo, said four MiG 21 and 23s Friday bombed Baidoba, 150 miles inside Somali territory. Four schoolchildren under the age of seven were killed when a bomb struck a primary school in the crossroads town of 10,000 people.

Thursday, a pair of Ethiopian MiG 21 and 23 fighters killed two civilians and seriously injured seven on the border village of Abudwaq, the broadcast said.

The attacks were the third and fourth cross-border raids in five months. In January, an Ethiopian bombing raid on the town of Borama left 80 people dead and 105 wounded.

Ethiopia claims that Somalia uses civilian faciltiies as training bases for its army and anti-Ethiopian guerrillas of the Western Somalia Liberation Front, which is fighting for the independence of the Ethiopian-controlled Ogaden desert.

The January attack was in retaliation for a successful guerrilla raid on a railway inside Ethiopia, but government officials were at a loss to explain the motivation for the latest raids.

Ethiopia and Somalia have been in a virtual state of war since Somalia invaded Ethiopia in 1977 in an attempt to capture the disputed Ogaden.

Aided by Cuba, Ethiopia drove the Somalis back a year later.

There are at least two permanent U.S. army training teams in Somalia instructing Somalis in the use of the Red-eye system.

In July 1982, Ethiopian troops struck across two fronts into Somalia and occupied large sections in the north and center of the country.

During that invasion, Ethiopian plans routinely flew bombing missions up to 200 miles inside Somalia.

Earlier this week, Somalia accused Ethiopian troops of turning on anti-Somali rebel allies and slaughtering hundreds of rebels who tried to defect back to the Somali government side.

Both Ethiopia and the rebels have denied the charges.

Previous Ethiopian ambassador to Kenya and Djibouti 2011-2014 was from the Samaroon clan
Regional Vice-President of the Somali Region.
Plus one high ranking official I can not name, which eats under a different ethnic's seat.
