Habesha attacked the Sudanese army not long ago. Sudan responded in kind. It might be now tit for tat thing between them.

That said with so many developments in the region, I don't know what to believe in anymore.

Is this about the Nile Dam dispute?
Also are the Egyptians and Sudanese allies?
If they are why isn’t Egypt helping

Thanks

To my knowledge Sudan also has a Nile dispute with Egypt, but this dispute doesn't have the same intensity as the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia.

Oh it’s seems a very messy three way dispute. But surely Egypt has the legitimate claim. So I would like to think?

Ethiopians are bullying Sudan you hate to see it but Sudan is a big country it should be able to defend itself as this is the weakest Ethiopia ever.

@Abdi99

The GERD dam has some positive effects for Sudan.

1. It protects Sudan in the rainy season from floods and mudslides as the flow of Blue Nile will be controlled now.

2. It will give access to cheaper electricity for Sudan if the two countries sign an agreement on electrical power sharing.

3. Sudan can build its own dam downstream as justification for mitigating the GERD effect on its agriculture.

Thank you so much I see the benefits for Sudan it’s very clear but surely in any agreement there’s a give and take what would Egypt gain from this?

There is nothing for Egypt to gain from the GERD. The main immediate issue is about how long it will take to fill up the dam. If in 5 years then Egypt will lose about 50% of its water supply for that period. If I am not mistaken Ethiopia wants to do it in 7 years. Egypt is proposing something like 20 or more years.

The main long-term problem with the GERD for Egypt is that Ethiopia gets a spigot to control the Nile water volume. Egypt is afraid that Ethiopia will weaponize the GERD to exert pressure or even punish Egypt outright.

Another negative consequence of the GERD for Egypt is that Nile brings a lot of silt with it to Egypt which serves us a natural fertilizer to otherwise poor Egyptian soil. The dam will block the big portion of it. Ethiopia gets to keep it. Egyptian agricultural productivity will suffer as a result in terms of costs and volume.

Ethiopia has Egypt by the balls the only realistic way where Egypt gets to control the Nile is to go at war with Ethiopia after taking into account what you’ve just said.

The war is the worst scenario for Egypt as it can not control the territory. 100 million strong Ethiopia is not Gaza. A sting operation will only entrench Ethiopia and bring the worst possible outcome for Egypt in the long term.

It is best for Egypt to accept the GERD and find other ways for fresh water security.
