Does anyone know more about Elman Cali (AUN) who was an activist but was tragically killed in 1996. I want to know more about his life before the civil war and what motivated him to become an activist during the peak of the civil war.
The man was ahead of this time. When he said “no one can stop the sports”, he was right and his words still hold some truth even to this day. Remember when Drogba pleaded with his country to stop the war during the 2006 world cup qualifications and during the 2006 world cup fighting in the country was nearly nonexistent? Or when Etoo and Jay Jay Okocha came to somalia to play a friendly match and everyone from young boys to odays turned up to watch the game? Elman Cali would have been proud.
He was a great man and deserves all the respect he deserves. When people were killing each other over nothing in Xamar, he helped rehabilitate child soldiers and taught them that theres more to life than just killing and looting. His slogan “Put down the gun and take the pen” resonated with many. Mogadishu Stadium should be renamed after him in his honour.
He also has a daughter Ilwad Elman who followed in her father’s footsteps and is now an activist dedicated to helping her people in Somalia. May Allah help her in her endeavours.
