By an extremely rare coincidence, Chanukah, Christmas and Ramadan overlap this year - something that will not happen again until 2065. Not only that, Christians, Jews, Muslims and everyone else can celebrate another rarity - a partial solar eclipse on Christmas Day, something that won't happen again on Dec. 25 for more than 300 years. By another coincidence, Chanukah, which starts tonight at sunset, overlaps with the winter solstice, a major Shinto and wiccan holiday. And finally today, Sikhs are observing one of their major holidays, the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's two younger sons. It's all happening because of the rare agreement among lunar and solar calendars used by Christians, Muslims and Jews. By the Jewish calendar, which uses both the moon and the sun in determining holidays, the eight-day festival of Chanukah, with its candles and symbols of freedom, starts tonight at sundown. By the lunar Islamic calendar, the month-long festival of Ramadan, with its fasting and pious retreats, ends next Wednesday with the sighting of a new moon and the joyous celebration of Eid al-Fitr. And for most Christians who follow the solar calendar, the celebration of Christmas begins Sunday night with religious services and vigils. The three great Western religions differ on when a day begins - it's sunset for Jews and Muslims, just after midnight for Christians. They also disagree on when a month begins - it's the new moon for Jews and Muslims, something that Christian calendars ignore. But, this is a special year by all accounts because the month of Ramadan, the holiest on the Islamic calendar, is not returning to this year's exact configuration any time soon. This is because the Islamic calendar has 12 months of alternating 29 and 30 days, making a year that falls 11 days short of a solar year. Thus, Ramadan will start about 11 days earlier next year, and another 11 days earlier the year after that, and so on, moving Ramadan backward to autumn, then summer, then spring, before returning again in 33 years to December. But, in that year, 2033, both Ramadan and Chanukah will miss Christmas by hours. Chanukah will end that year on Christmas Eve, making it 2065 before this year's triple overlap occurs again.
