Egypt's former President Mohammed Morsi, who was ousted by the military in 2013, has died after fainting in a courtroom, officials say.

A top figure in the now-banned Islamist movement Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi collapsed in a cage after speaking at a hearing on charges of espionage.

Morsi, who was 67, had been in custody since being ousted following mass protests a year after he took office.

Officials then launched a crackdown on his and Muslim Brotherhood supporters.

Morsi's hearing in the capital, Cairo, was related to charges of espionage emanating from suspected contacts with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

He collapsed moments after addressing the court from a cage some defendants are kept in during sessions, Egypt's public prosecutor said, adding that a medical report showed no apparent recent injuries on Morsi's body.

Egypt couldn’t catch a break.

He was democratically elected and somehow instilled hope in his countrymen on the heels of Mubarak’s ousting, only to prove a sectarian fucktard who completely changed the constitution and embraced extremism to the point he turned the majority of his supporters against him. And then to be ousted by Al Sisi who’s just another Mubarak.

One thing’s for sure, things would’ve been worse had this guy managed to keep power. They can be happy they’re back at square one.

This is wrong the military pretty much rules Egypt for the day the monarchy was overthrown Morsi didn't even touch the constitution unlike Sisi who has changed it twice so far. The military turned over Morsi and threw him out then threw Morsi out of the door too. My only only problem with Morsi AUN is that he was too weak and got played like a fiddle he should've crushed the military while it was weak

Sisi is just another Mubarak, the devil you know. Morsi was something else. Egypt would’ve been fucked hard had he held on. The way he was popular and completely screwed it up and lost the common man is practically a record.
