Most unoriginal names also. Every second suburb has jadeed or qadeem in the name.

And if it doesn’t have that in the name then they name the suburb after it’s function. Suburb with universities? Call it Academic City.

:damn:

Wallahi, I'm so used to those sorts of names that I never even saw them as uninspired but I see what you mean. But, you know, to this day I can't fully process that Somalis named two hills "Naaso Hablood":

We are a creative people.

One funny but cruel thing Somalis like to do is nickname people based on a trait you shouldn't nickname someone based on. If you're blind you are "Axmad Indhoole". My father used to have a driver whose name was Khalid (for the purposes of this story) but he went by "Khalid Buur" to everyone because, well, he was obese. Even this poor man's own hooyo used the nickname.

:damn: :mjcry:

I can't think of any now but sometimes the nicknames can get quite painfully creative or specific.

Hold my caano geel you might have a competition in the department of creative names. There is Iskushubaan meaning diarrhea and dhuusamareeb literally means fart emptying. I used to have a list of somali city with funny sounding names.

Iskushuban means mixed together. Referring to the water springs near the town. It also does mean what you said but the town is named after the former not the latter.

But yes, you’re right there is a crap ton of Somali towns that have ridiculous names.

There is a town that used to be called “penis grab” in Mudug.

I know man but that's the shactiro i grew up with. Did you say reer mudug have a town by that name? I always hear all sort of crazy stories from that place so i wouldn't be surprised but dayum man.

By the way i found a video of a somali elder recounting the same shactiro about the name of dhuusamareeb. I think somalis from the past were to some extent trolls and they would gather in their ceel as a primitive sspot or csspot ceelsomalispot making jokes.

I see some people saying that this should be an example for Somalia to have a new capital.

I actually prefer @DR OSMAN for an EU type model.

Right now the European Union has:

Brussels (which hosts the commission and oversees the whole EU institution)

Frankfurt which hosts the Central Bank

Luxemburg which hosts the European Court of Justice and all Judiciary Institutions

Strasbourg which hosts the Parliament.

Somalia needs

Mogadishu as the capital that hosts only Villa Somalia and oversees all institutions

Baydhabo to host Somali Constitutional Court and all of Nations Judiciary Institutions

Beledweyne to host the Somali Central Bank.

Garowe to host the Somali Parliament

Something of a similar model.

That would be good check n balance so power is separated by cities, not concentrated. We need to run away from concentration of power, with somali mentality of clannism, it's a deadly mix. Centralism plus Clannism.

The capital should only 'oversee' the regions, not have fiscal/policy/decision making powers. What is some guy in Hamar going to tell some person in Beletwayn? the ppl of beletwayn know whats best for them not some guy that comes thru bribery every 4 years in hamar.

@Kheyre it's in the benefit of mogadishu power isn't concentrated, ppl n clans will all come to hamar and destabilize them, if you leave them to their region, hamar benefits has breathing room to enjoy peace n development. That's why I think a loose federation or confederation is in the benefit of all Somali clans. Not just Regions but the capital also.

@Kheyre but the best reason for 'separate governments' we can hold our leaders to account. For example beletwayn can see PL developing and demand from it's govt the same. PL can see a good policy in beletwayn and replicate it, this is good n keeps our leaders in check. But 1 govt, u only have 1 govt to counter balance performance.

No leader will be able to get away with doing nothing.

@Kheyre the other reason I support it. Like America the capital is small and insignificant, the power n wealth is stored in their region, it's harder to destroy a country where power/resources are diversified into it's regions. Australia is the same, we have small capital, but the power n wealth is in the regions. Why did these countries choose this model, it's a wise model.

@Kheyre the only negative I seen in federalism/confederation is the level of 'duplication' of government in regions n center but im willing to accept that negative when I see the over-whelming majority of good points.

@Kheyre if these centralists are genuine, why don't they present good point of centralism and returning to a Somalia that is siyad barre inspired. They can't niyahow, that's why they hide around and try to 'stall' Somalia progress. If their genuine, how is returning to a single govt after a civil war over a central GOVT is wise.

Reminds me of Qatars Education city but they at least have multiple universities on that little strip.
