Egypt Plans to Execute 12 Scholars

Death sentence on scholars in Egypt
It is a sad day to see this tragedy unfolding. After the heinous Rab'a massacre in which government forces brutally killed around a thousand people in one of the historic masjids of Cairo, instead of acknowledging the crime and holding the perpetrators responsible, the government unbelievably charged specific Muslim clerics and community leaders associated with the Muslim Brotherhood with crimes of treason and sedition against the State.

A number of international scholarly bodies have issued a joint statement to bring awareness to this travesty and to condemn this unjust decision.
This is a translation of their statement:
A Statement by the Scholars of the Ummah Regarding the Unjust Death Sentences in Egypt
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds and may peace and blessings be upon our master Mohammad and his pure and good family, and his honourable companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.
With anger and objection, the scholars of the Ummah received the news of the criminal and politicised rulings issued by the Egyptian judiciary to execute twelve scholars and leaders of Islamic activism in Egypt alongside dozens of others sentenced to life imprisonment.
Scholars from many institutions and associations are calling upon one another to clarify their positions regarding the unjust rulings and warn against their consequences. In this statement, the scholars declare the following:
1) The scholars affirm that the arrest of these reformers, Islamic activists and demanders of freedom and dignity, and harming them unjustly is an abominable crime, let alone condemning them to death. The issuance of these unjust and politicized judgments is an enormous crime and these preachers and reformers are instead deserving of reverence and honour.
They are the keenest to defend their homeland, are the guardians of virtue and among the most important representatives of virtue remaining in our nation. The Messenger of Allah, sala Allahu ‘alayhi wasalam said:
“Allah ‘azza wa jal will punish those who punish people in this world.”(Muslim)
And He says:
“If this world were to be destroyed, that would be less significant before Allah ‘azza wa jal than the unlawful killing of a believer.” (Ibn Majah)
2) The scholars affirm that the issuance of death sentences against this group of nobles is a bad sign and that taking the initiative to implement these rulings would be majorly foolish and one that will open the doors to unimaginable consequences.
Allah says:
“And whoever kills a believer intentionally, their reward will be Hell—where they will stay indefinitely.1 Allah will be displeased with them, condemn them, and will prepare for them a tremendous punishment.” (Qur’an 4:93)
And in the Qudsi Hadith, the Almighty says:
“I will declare war against him who treats with hostility a pious worshipper of Mine.” (Al-Bukhari)
3) Scholars demand the immediate abolition of these unjust rulings and warn of the consequences of their implementation. Such may trigger unpredictable consequences and result in uncontrollable actions against those responsible, the regime and its supporters.
4) The scholars call on His Excellency the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and His Excellency the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim b. Hamad, and the capable leaders to intervene urgently to stop these executions. This is of the greatest deeds; the preservation of life and a response to injustice and aggression.
Allah says:
“That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life—unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land—it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.1 ˹Although˺ Our messengers already came to them with clear proofs, many of them still transgressed afterwards through the land.” (Qur’an 5:32)
5) Scholars affirm that it is upon the entire Ummah to take action to prevent this crime, through media campaigns and public events. We call upon Muslims around the world to gather and rally in front of Egyptian embassies and diplomatic missions. The scholars warn that silence is a form of bitter betrayal, with dire consequences in this world and the next.
The Messenger of Allah sala Allahu ‘alayhi waslam said:
“The Prophet sala Allahu ‘alayhi waslam said: “No (Muslim) man will desert a man who is a Muslim in a place where his respect may be violated and his honour aspersed without Allah deserting him in a place where he wishes his help; and no (Muslim) man who will help a Muslim in a place where his honour may be aspersed and his respect violated without Allah helping him in a place where he wishes his help.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)
6) Scholars call on civil society and human rights institutions in all countries of the world, especially in the Western world, to act urgently, strive to stir up public opinion and put pressure on governments to halt this great crime.
