I don't know if that's true for the South Sudanese diaspora in the States, but 90% and upwards of us in Australia marry within our own community.

The only related issue we're having now is the unreasonable dowry prices we're expected to pay; the Dinka from Bahr El Ghazal marry for 50k; and the Dinka from Upper Nile (like me) marry for 80k. People get into debts and work 7 days straight for years on end just to get married.

We get loans and the family chips in; and since our conception of family extends to 9th cousins... you can get a great deal of help. It also helps if one has sisters -- as they would use a portion of her dowry to get married.

The dowry typically goes to her parents and her brothers; a smaller (almost token) amount is then shared with grand-parents and aunts and uncles.

Young South Sudani men are now revolting against the system of high dowry prices; it's just not reasonable to expect recent refugees to adhere to such a system. If I was a quitter, I would marry a Senegalese-Gambian.
