I always thought that was weird. In a mosque where 90% of the attendees are Somali why preach in Arabic? Turks preach in Turkish. Iranian in Farsi. Pakistanis in Pak Urdu.

Some Somali mosques do preach in Somali tbf by many do it in Arabic.

HERE in UK they preach Arabic and expect us to understand what the hell they are saying. They then give a 2 minute summary in Somali and a long prayer in Arabic at the end. I think they do it to accommodate the small number of Arabic and Pakistani members in the crowd.

The main mosque is Pakistani but most of the attendance were Somali. Somalis began to gain more influence in the mosque but the Pakistanis would not have that. So they did weird things like change the time of Friday prayer to later afternoon and make Eid days, a day before or after the normal date. When asked if they would open the mosque early for prayer on normal eid day, they would not do it even though Somalis were the main attendees. So when the Somalis created their own mosque, you would expect them to preach in Somali wouldn't you?!

In Somalia (Puntland in particular) they held sermons in Arabic and people understood the gyst of what they were saying. I also found it weird and how they also avoided Somali issues by talking about Syria or Palestine, don't get me wrong I'm pro-Palestine but it was weird. I was told later Imam's fear for their life if they talk about Somali issues so much so that they avoid speaking in Somali. Caajib wallahi.

I've noticed it aswell sxb, i always think to myself why do some Somalis have this self-hatred disease in them, whereas other ethnicities don't seem to have it?

In sydney, All somali Masjids Do Arabic, Somali and English. Alhamdulillah, we have A lot of Somalis here who speak Arabic.

I think this is more of an issue of madhab. Some are more strict on the use of Arabic in khutbahs and others are not as strict, Somalis tend to be Shafi'i which is closer to the former end of the spectrum.
