I've came across Somalis who believe Somalia would be better off under a dictatorship while others felt the opposite, whats your opinion?

Pre 1969 Somali people were united, loved each other and loved statehood. Tribalism were on it's decline. A dictator took over in 1969 and 21 years later, Somali people kicked out the dictator, they are divided till today, no two people trust each other anymore, tribalism is on it's raise and Somalia is the biggest failed State in the world. Other countries with former dictatorships like Libya, Iraq and Egypt face the same problems.

Conclusion : One must be unaware of history, a tribalistic person or just someone with low IQ, if he thinks a dictator is the solution.

I firmly believe that if Siad Barre remained Dictator of Somalia, but he established a capitalist system rather than a Soviet-inspired Socialist system, the Somali State would’ve never descended into a civil war.

Some countries require a strongman to be in charge, but as long as the people are free to trade and engage in commerce, I don’t think they actually care who’s in charge. Just don’t do anything crazy and you should be fine. Similar to the dictatorship of Singapore.

As long as people are fat and happy, things should be fine.

Siad Barre unfortunately was a Socialist, and he put all the country’s investment into Mogadishu while neglecting the rest of the country. No wonder why Hargeisa and other regions were resentful and upset. It’s one thing to concentrate political capital, but you can’t concentrate economic capital without guaranteeing a civil war. Hargeisa could’ve developed on its own, as well as Bosaso and Baydhabo, but there was zero economic freedom. People were promoted to government jobs based on connections rather than merit, and if you were an ambitious young entrepreneur, there weren’t many opportunities for you to make it big. So the poor people of the countryside did what was expected and they took up arms against the state.

Fatal miscalculation by Siad Barre by not allying with the United States. He should’ve realized that America might proclaim that they support democracy and human rights....but national interests trump any concern over the political practices of their client states. America was far more worried about Russia, they were in a Cold War, and the Americans would’ve tolerated an imperfect dictatorial Somali State so long as the country was capitalist and supported US interests. Just like Saudi Arabia currently, Chile under Pinochet, Iran under the Shah, etc.

Somalia would’ve probably been ruled by Siad’s son, and the country would be relatively prosperous and stable. But Siad was a fucking idiot who didn’t understand economics or how his actions might damage the long-term unity of Somalia. So as a result, this is the mess that Somalia is currently in

The conditions for a dictator to arise and be supported no longer exists.

Yeah I think the ship has already sailed for that scenario.

The more likely outcome is that Somalia will be broken into small, politically isolated states that are dominated by their much larger neighbour Ethiopia.

Being a dictator requires that you at least be competent in organizing a military force, having intelligence capabilities, and overwhelming firepower. Somalis have a problem even listening to their superiors, so how can a large scale military program work in a fractured country? Unless you somehow figure out how to recruit and train 50,000 loyal men to be in your army...and I don’t see that happening anytime soon

Somalia would work best if they were a client state to a much more powerful nation. Whether it’s the Americans, the Turks, the European Union, or some other state.

They haven’t proven themselves trustworthy enough to run a state competently. Low-IQ local warlords frequently derail peace talks based on whims, and they’re known for being fickle.

That’s why the military of Somalia needs to be created as an independent institution, separated from politics entirely, with a class of leaders who have firm control over their armed forces. That way, no idiotic tribal leader who stumbles his way into the Presidency can do any lasting damage.

Somalis tried to elect “a smart guy” like Farmaajo as their leader and look how things turned out. You’re not gonna get any solutions in Somalia from these incompetent men in suits. You need a different breed of men entirely, who don’t care about politics and who only care about maintaining order. Nothing is more important than order
