Do you think Somaliweyn would be in a better place if it was secular?

Quite the Islamist.
No. Islam is the best thing that has happened to us. We would've otherwise completely finished each other off during the civil war. Certain tribes would've been perheps extinct by now.

May it is the Fear of Allah and xisaab on the Judgement that kept alot of people on leash during the Civil War and the anarchy that followed, no wonder alot of people became even more religious(partly due to other reasons too)

Not really, if we only had stuck to maintaining the same law-based system, we had lived after for hundreds/thousand of years, we wouldn't be having these problems today. A legal system with inspirations from Xeer, a mix of civil law and Islamic law (Shariah), is the best way forward in my opinion, with maybe reformation to accustom to a modern society and move away from the clan aspects.

Having a fully Secular or a fully Shariah based country, will unfortunately lead to the exploitation of certain segments of society, since humans are corrupted by nature. In a secular country, religious people will be targeted (look at western countries and where they are heading today, or look back during Siad Barre's time and how he went after religious people and institutions). In a fully Shariah based system, the likelihood of not being implemented is unfortunately there and using it to discriminate against people, eve muslims. Including Somalis practising certain sects or Somalis that are muslims but not observants/very religious. Look at those regions/countries, that have the closest system to a Shariah-based law and the injustice going on over there.

A fundamental intrinsic undercurrent of secularism is the view that one should progress beyond past "unreasonable" forces, setting religion as a fundamentally outdated mode of organizing a society. It is not a neutral philosophy. Because secularism only truly flourishes when the populace becomes increasingly liberal to irreligious. A secular system makes no sense if the population doesn't hold secular values. Now, what people are indirectly asking when wanting a secular country, is to state, should the religious character of the population change to a more irreligious stance? And when we are discussing this clear definition, I view that as a threat because now you want to change how we approach life. This idea that it is merely a functional stance, a practical political solution, is stupidity at best, or disingenuous/dishonest at worst. And there is the broader question of how secularism is just a tool for imperialist western nations to subdue the true progress and relative independent development of "developing" countries, but that's another discussion.

From the personal individual side, a secularist amounts to a "humanist." Here are some main points to clearly orientate the often elusive aspects that define a lot of the secular motivations:

- Humanists believe in a naturalistic metaphysic attitude toward believing the "supernatural" as myth, that regards "nature" as the totality of being -- so strictly materialists and naturalists.

- Humanists believe science is the only effective tool to rely on, with humans being part of evolutionary development, mind and body encapsulated into this process, meaning no conscious experience after death.

- Given ideological vision, humanist places the ultimate faith in humankind, solving man's problems through reason and science.

- Humanists, although they believe in certain objective limits to humans, are against determinism, fatalism, and predestination and think they are the shapers of their own destinies.

- They ground their ethics and morals on worldly happiness, and that there is no need for God to have ethics and morality.

- Humanists want a far-reaching social program, that includes institutionalized frameworks as democracy and economical systems, and of course, humanism to touch everywhere possible. A complete social implementation.

A humanist is an ideal secularist. I hope you see the problems in extrapolating those ideas to a Muslim society, and then expect anything good to come of it, as it contradicts Islam in many, many ways.

There is nothing religious about warlords, what a weird comment. Aideed committed genocide against innocent Darood civilians and tried to exterminate us but failed. He is responsible for hundreds of thousands of RX being starved to death. If warlords could have they definitely would have tried to make certain tribes extinct but they failed because the civil war ended in a stalemate.

A country can be secular while still maintaining religiosity and piety. Ethiopia is a secular nation yet both the Muslims and Christians maintain their religion
