Do you know that in 1960 when both Somalia and Somaliland got their independence and formed a nation, 85% of Somalis in the Northern regions (Somaliland and Puntland) and 70% of Somalis in the South were nomads or semi-nomads. The Somali population was estimated to be 2.2 million Somali people. 1.6 million people were nomads.

One Somali shilling was equivalent to US$0.14

Thanks for sharing a little bit of history sxb and I do agree with you, my father was a nomad until his teenage years before moving to the beautiful Xamar in the 1960s. We must never be ashamed to admit historical facts and acknowledge it's impact in the creation of Somalia

Only a fool will be ashamed of it, however most of our culture is still based on the Somali nomadic patriarchal culture and that needs imminent attention. But that’s for another topic.

Somali Bananas.

The Italians planted the first banana farms in 1919 along the Shabelle. Banana exports to Italy started in 1927 and 3 years later, Italy introduced tariffs against bananas from the Canary Islands which were much cheaper than the Somali bananas and this has contributed to the survival of Somali banana exports to Italy long after independence. Initially, all the banana farms were owned by the Italians.
