Do you consider yourself to be a feminist and why?

sorevsa

@asveros
do you use terms like "mansplaining" and "fighting the patriarchy"?
no. im not an activist or keyboard warrior on these topics. i agree mostly with radical feminism and oppose liberal feminism which is what you're referring to. but since radfem doesn't benefit me(men) I have no reason to speak up and spread awareness about it thus keeping these views to myself.

If you don’t support this then you’re finished, no two ways about it.

wish more women were like you. That's a great perspective.

Salam, am new to SSpot. Modern feminism is a concept claiming both genders are basically the exact same in the socio-economic sphere. In contrast, Islam states that the genders aren't equal, psychologically or physically, and compensates that difference with certain immutable responsibilities unique to each gender. So I am not a feminist and only the misguided and munafiqeen are.

unfortunately modern feminism isn't about this anymore.

Judging modern feminism based on the actions of a vocal minority is like conflating Islam and Islamist terrorism.

Most feminists are still striving for equality in pay, conditions and treatment. The feminist movement is still about equality, regardless of the actions of a vocal few.

We still have issues like maternity leave, the gender pay gap and sexual harassment in the workplace. The true definition of feminism still hasn’t been attained in the West, let alone the rest of the world.

I think I have identified as a feminist (discovering the ideology at 16 and accepting it) from a young age say 13. When I started to notice that men and women are very different. My mom rarely asked me to help me in the kitchen, she asked other stuff me to clean and take care of my younger brother’s school work, .. etc. Whenever, brainwashed Habaryars came around they would always brag about being able to cook, clean the whole iftar or suhoor dishes for the whole fam at 8-10 and some other weird stuff. They told me if you keep playing computer games and do not enter the kitchen, how will you marry? Even my western Somali friends were surprised, I feel pressurized to be naaq nool, I expressed disdain at all those lectures that I was being told by older women, I hated it. I do not like the gender roles that’s why? I can’t imagine my whole life being a servant and I don’t need mehr or anything, why it will make me a worse wife or a mom?i don’t know why there are stereotypes against feminists. And I don’t go around screaming “I am a feminist” and I don’t hate men. I agree with the definition, that’s it.

Actually, Islam says that men and women are equal but not identical. Many imams will say this exact same phrase.

They have equally important roles but they’re not identical.

So this entire idea of “Islam says women are not equal and therefore I’m against gender equality” is absolute bullshit.

I wouldn't say it's the minority. Most feminists hold liberal feminism views that aren't working towards achieving equality.

This belief system is held strongly by white women who use their "minority" status to achieve more advantages than their peers and is being pushed strongly in today's society(more so in the west).

"
Take the ‘Free The Nipple (FTN) campaign’ which can be filed under walk for stupid “feminist” ideas. FTN was started by filmmaker Lina Esco in 2012 to highlight the fact that men do not get hassled when appearing topless in public but women are not afforded the same freedom to do so.

Notions of choice and equality underpin liberal feminism, which results in appalling ignorance when it comes to the material and lived reality of women and girls. For example, I have witnessed campaigners against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) being abused on social media for using the term “female” to describe this human rights violation. Apparently it is transphobic to suggest that vaginas are exclusively female.

Things that are currently classed as empowering for women include: buying unbearably high shoes, pole-dancing as exercise, breast enhancement surgery, posing naked on Instagram and “sex work”. But what one thing do these submissive practices all have in common? They are all performed to please men. And all supported by liberal feminists."

Issues like Free The Nipple is near the bottom of any feminist’s list of change they want to see.

When you’re making less than your male coworkers, subject to harassment based on gender and routinely face unequal treatment, whether you can show your nipple or not surprisingly isn’t that fucking important.

All of these factors have been improving in the west and the gap is already closing at an accelerating rate compared to the past.

According to Statistics Canada (2022), as of 2021, the gender pay gap for full-time and part-time employees is 0.89, which means women make 89 cents of every dollar men make. The gender pay gap for full-time employees is 0.90, which means women make 90 cents of every dollar men make.Apr 6, 2022

Modern day feminism mainly benefits white women and white supremacy in general. Only this time, it's not used to benefit white men, but white women.

"
As a progressive intervention into patriarchy, feminism has traditionally centered (white) women's experience, yet when sex and gender are combined with race, feminism tends to lose its progressive edge. We argue that (white) feminism ideologically grounds itself in a gendered victimology that masks its participation and functionality in white supremacy. By erasing women of color, positioning women as victims of white male hegemony, and failing to hold white women accountable for the production and reproduction of white supremacy, (white) feminism manifests its allegiance to whiteness and in doing so commits “discursive violence”. We end with calling for ideological intersectionality as a possible corrective.
