Do Somalis need their own social media company?

I've seen some people say that Somalis need their own social media company and to get off tiktok and twitter but theoretically what would or should that that app look like? Will it be more or less toxic than the current offerings?

Somalis are heavy social media users and social media savvy even if from badiyo, I don't think the concept would fail. We are very active on even small platforms.

Most facebook users are from Somalia and if they're users from the diaspora, they are usually older. Definitely a generational divide in users. Most of Somali twitter is oldheads discussing politics in Somali or much younger diaspora discussing stuff in English. Tiktok is both users Somalia and Somali diaspora and all ages from what I've seen.

Was it from lack of interest because everyone seems to be entrenched in the current social media offerings? I kind of get it, if you've been doing your thing on facebook for years, you have no incentive to switch to a new thing.

Yep they all flopped and decided to just be normal workers instead of the next Zuckerbergs.

Somalis from Somalia should have their own separate social media since we diasporans can't relate with them at all. I also want to see a social media for diaspora somalis since tiktok/instagram is an enemy to us. So to feel at home we defo need one.

First, if there was a Somali social media. They should only allow people to speak/write Somali and then have no translate option. It is the reason why no one post crazy things that happen in facebook.
Second, they should advertise to older Somalis, fobs, and Somalis from Somalia so that it may be a niche thing.
Third, they should invite popular Somali speaking influencers into the app and they should be incentivized into it so that they may bring their followers there.
Fourth, it should have safety precautions.
Anyways, that’s all the rules I can think of. So that nothing embarrassing can come out of it. I’m sure there are more rules someone else can think of.

social media limited by ethnic group would be quite boring and because of that, it would never take off. Somali people on facebook are just fine I dont really think they care about FB selling their data, and to be honest I wouldn't really care either as long as it dosent personally effect me. I think the reason you guys want a seperate social media is so Somalis don't go viral all the time good or bad. But I dont think a seperate social media would really fix that, it will find its way onto the mainstream. One good example is somalispot, how many times has something embrassing originated from here? Its centered on somali people. How many trolls are on this website aswell? many trolls are here. So basically im saying it wont fix the problem and it wouldn't take off because theres no demand for it. Maybe if the somali government limited tiktok or FB forcing people to use that, but other then that I honestly dont think this can happen
