    Most came as refugees but will claim their parents came as educated expats in the 80s

    Refugee, like 95% of Somalis. The only Somalis that I know to have lived in the west pre-1990's are either Christian converts, mostly in Italy, and the few that were forced to flee from Barre's regime.

    My Father first immigrated to France from Djibouti in the early 80's to attend University there.

    Got his PHD, got married and moved to Canada.

    My Mother came to Canada after living 6 years at her rich Edo's house in Kenya. She got brainwashed by the whole "go to the west and attain the best life ever" scam rip.:chrisfreshhah:

    So, both immigrants.:hillarybiz:

    My paternal ancestor wanted to break the world record in solo kayaking and travelled solo on his kayak around the world in 1774. His kayak was attacked by a group of deadly humpback wales and he fended for himself not to be eaten by these monsters and killed all of them, then he sought refuge in an Indian Ocean island close to the mainland of Australia. He built a boat and traveled to the mainland which was empty at the time and started a new nation with the aboriginal people. We could be included in the migrant section though others call us pioneers.

    Two of the wealthiest Australians were refugees and they always like to tell their stories from rags to riches to motivate others and those Somalis who are embarrassed by the term of a refugee are those whose parents were never aspirational and still live in the projects/ ghettos that they were born and live on the public purse. Google famous people who were refugees and you will be surprised the company that we Somalis got. The question is where are you at now?

    @Hybrid()

    You are lucky guys, most of the Somali single men who went to America in the 1980’s married African American women to get their sharci. When they fled those wives and their children, most mothers renamed their children, baptised their children in their local churches and forgot about their former husbands/dads. A couple who haven’t changed their names are an American well known artist and a celebrity chef.
