Did Somali Americans have it hard growing up ?

We often hear about how hard Africans had it growing up in the states and how hard they were bullied when they first touched down especially in the hood African booty scratcher etc did our Somali American brothers and sisters go through that share your experiences

Stop the lies about UK lot being bullied. Focus on your local community. Somalis are the same everywhere, their environment can have some affect on their upbringing making them a bit different however we’re mostly the same wherever we go. Ain’t no one bullying Somalis :camby::camby::camby:

I had beautiful childhood in the netherlands always the only black kid never experienced any racism. Then moved to england in the early 2000's and experienced the worst racism from madows in my area got so bad we had to avoid areas and busses. Anyways we had a clan meeting how to deal with the madows. The decision was made to attack the biggest drug dealer in the area. I still remember his name it was rumpel. Needless to say his drug stash got robbed and the whole city got high that day. They never even retaliated to many of us
They got bullied themselves for being robbed by somalis. I never knew wat racism was till i met these niggahs

There was a period of adjustment in early 2000s when a bunch of Somalis came outta refugee camps and African countries to middle and highschools across the twin cities. They were messed with for a time.

Tell me why Somalis that were born in America (Americanized) were often the biggest bullies to these groups. If not that, they’d avoid them all together. I remember this!

Where does this narrative of UK diaspora being bullied come from? It’s true we were not welcomed but that’s normal. The culture here is inherently nasty.

I remember that period Somali guys including reer Xamer males always fought Caribbean. They were not walked over.

Lol probably saw some tweets from UK twitter.

They confuse resentment for bullying. An ajnabi could resent me and it wouldn’t matter because he wouldn’t be able to do anything.

Also I have a theory that it could be some form of FKD towards Isaaqs as they’re the majority of the diaspora. Although there are other clans in big numbers that aren’t Isaaq. I’ve only seen this narrative pushed by our brothers in North America.

What they feel to realise is that you can’t really compare life/upbringing in London one of the most densely populated and diverse cities in the world with growing up in Minnesota😂. I think the American equivalent would be life in New York, but there aren’t too many Somalis there, so we can’t really compare US to UK diaspora.

In my experience the majority of Somalis live in the suburbs alongside white Americans so we rarely interacted with AA. Even so we avoided them as we got the memo from the folks who live here as to what kind of people they are. Somalis were always in packs and only ever stuck with eachother if anything we were the bullies lol

I never thought about the clanism aspect.

But I agree there was certainly a lot of resentment, envy and misunderstanding between us and Jamaicans. They even had issues with our parents so it was more than ‘bullying’.

Minnesota Somalis live together if I’m correct. In London we’re dispersed throughout North, East, West ect and each borough has its own racial cultural dynamics.

In Canada Somalis use to beef with Jamaicans. Before Somalis took over spots Jamaicans use to dominate. It’s calm now but there seems to be a common occursnce with Somalis beefing with reer bombaclat

Why can’t you compare to growing up in mpls to London? Do you think there’s no blacks here? A lot of AAs from the most violent cities like Chicago, St.Louis and Detroit came here for welfare. The whole Northside of Minneapolis is majority AA and there’s plenty of Somalis who live there.

You’re just making excuses for your fulay ass community bro madows are nothing to be scared of I use to sleep groups of them dolo in elementary and middle school. I held it down while being the only Somali.

Cap I lived in Minneapolis for a couple years.....you guys are segregated from the AA for the most part...they even take you guys as a joke

They would always say Southside was soft compared to Northside where they dominated

The london and Toronto kids atleast lived in the SAME hoods as jamaicans and had to deal with them

Of the diaspora the american (Mn somalis) where the least involved in that gang lifestyle (Seattle, San Diego and ohio malis were banging heavy tho)

Shitty behaviour, fobs were welcomed where I live and usually they would assimilate with the diaspora fast if they were young enough. Some of my good homies came when they were 13-15.

In anglophone countries someone of the other ethnicities are very white worshipping. it’s sick bro

I think it’s cause there’s a certain vileness to Anglo Saxon culture. Plus they create hierarchies amongst different minorities and pit them against each other.

I lived in Italy before moving to the UK. It was the biggest cultural shock of my life.
