Did anyone else have parents who used them to practice their English?

My parents did that with us and it sucks now because our Somali skills suffered. I can speak basic somali but im not good with more complex conversations cause my grammar sucks. My younger siblings on the other hand can’t speak a word, they only understand a little :(

I feel like my parents lowkey did us dirty. The Somali people I know whose parents spoke Somali in the home only, speak it fluently and without struggle even though they were born and raised in Canada.

Does anybody know how to learn fluent Somali as an adult?

My mother has never spoken to me in full English, only individual words sometimes. My dad speaks in English sometimes but mostly Somali.

My parents purposefully never spoke English with us so that I knew Somali fluently. Basically sacrificed opportunity to speak English better so I’m still translating stuff for them here and there.

I’d recommend you go to Somali territories for a bit. Immersion is the best way

I was born in the netherlands till I was 7 years old both my parents were speaking to me in dutch then, when I went to england my dad told me to stop speaking dutch but speak in english in the house to learn the language faster so when I play on my ps2 he forced me to put the english language 💀. my mom doesnt know english that well so I was talking to her in jab jab somali she cant speak English properly but she understand, all that english lessons made me forget my dutch language very easily I barely spoke proper somali in the house only when I went to kenya and somalia for the first time that's when I started learning somali but it's still not enough compared to the locals

Nah my parents spoke to us in Somali and English. They also made sure we spent time back home to learn Somali.

They didn’t really need to practice English on us as they completed university in Australia.

You're not Somali if you didn't get half your vocabulary from Hooyo shouting on the phone with friends and relatives :banderas:
