Diaspora Tax

They'll ask for your payslips for X amount of years (since the last time you paid) and then they'll calculate it. You'll then get a stamped invoice with this amount that you take with you to Eritrea (it's been illegal for the embassies/consulates to take remittances for a while)

It seems very sophisticated and coordinated, lol. Even though I personally view it as extortion to tax foreign residents, I find it intriguing that only Eritrea receives backlash, when the US does it too, the only two countries to have this tax system. The US even requires you to pay a hefty tax when renouncing your citizenship. Anything gets taxed there 🤣

Eh, it’s only 2%. Pretty trivial amount in the grander scheme of things. For me it’s worth paying so I that I was able to claim citizenship when I turned 18. I’m also allotted a plot of land in my village. Not a bad tradeoff

khaatumo state should do this. 100 € per working unmarried adult, 50 per working married adult. 30 for per jobless unmarried adult, 20 per jobless married adult

This so-called “diaspora tax” was imposed on Eritreans across the globe for the first time in the 1990s, soon after Eritrea’s independence from Ethiopia. Back then, most Eritreans abroad welcomed this new levy as an opportunity to contribute to the rebuilding of a country devastated by 30 years of conflict and to help the veterans of the liberation wars.
Eritreans never welcomed the diaspora forced tax which is continuation of the EPLF war effort funding during the struggle as soon as independence was achieved it was now the state responsibility to develop the nation and democracy or some forum of it to be established as that's what war of independence was about.

Lol u sending stimulus checks like Trump.

All the billions Somalis send home nothing comes of it. Never ending cycle of need. If we had decent Govt they can use money to actually build something worthwile and create jobs Like roads or electrical plants

There was no sanctions in 90s or 2000s but the diaspora tax became a tool used by the regime to get the diaspora not to oppose if they would like to maintain their holdings or visit their families back home

The day things settle down back home, and the people become less economically dependent, the diaspora will suddenly have a huge chunk of extra money each month that they can spend on better housing, neighbourhoods, schools, cars, business ideas, savings etc.

It will be truly transformative.

Instead of sending money every month back home why don't u buy them houses, cars and businesses then leave them to do rest why teach beggars to beg when you can teach workers to build their nation in the long run it will benefit you and them

This sending money (for over 30 years) has destroyed the country from building up with corrupt government and civilians(families)

leaving diaspora from not building themselves or their family where they at
