I’m African-Australian and why can’t she be an African-American? I think the hyphenated version was for those whose parents hail from Africa.

They are being silly and its really not worth debating. Their argument is we are from africa and we are american now hence why we are african americans. They know full well that name is for the descendants of slaves whi dont know exactly where in africa they are from. i never seen irish american or italian american call themselves european americans. Only selfhaters who dont want to be seen as somalis hide under the tag african blah blah.

There is difference between African Australian and American American. In us, Somalis, Nigerians Kenyans aren't considered African Americans because cultural differences

I understand the significance the name has to those whose ancestors were brought against their will while shackled as slaves from Africa and that's why I said the hyphenated version is maybe to these who migrated from Africa. Anyway, let's not take the spotlight off Mrs Deqa Dhalac.
