Database of Somali names boys & girls

The other thread asking what we'd name our sons got me thinking about how original and pure Somali names are literally dying out as more and more new parents give their kids Arab names. What makes it worse is many don't name their kids Arabic names that have some relation to Islam like Maxamed and Cabdullaahi or Caasha and Faadumo, which would be understandable and ok, but rather Arabic names like Fahad, Muhannad, Zayn, Rayaan, Kanza, Caaliya, Sabriina, etc.

Can you imagine a Saudi or Yemeni naming his sons Caydiid, Raage or Liibaan or his daughters Hodan, Filsan or Ilwaad? The thought itself is ludicrous. So wth then is wrong with us? It's time for us awakened Somalis to fight against the 'Arabization' or 'Semetisization' of our Cushitic culture, and preserving our names is one of the main battles. Below I'm going to list pure names of Somali Cushitic origin. I hope this thread is stickied so it can serve as a resource for young Somali couples looking to name their babies. Of course the following lists are not exhaustive, but I'm going to try and cover as much names as I can. If by any chance there are names you feel aren't original Somali names please point them out. Also feel free to add Somali names that I have missed.

half of these words are missions to say, nagadaa niyoo ilmaheen magacoo islaami halow bixiyo

First of all most aren't difficult to pronounce or enunciate at all. But let's say ur right and they are, ur basically saying ur willing to forgo a huuuuge part of ur culture and inheritance from ur ancestors because u can't be bothered to move ur tongue a certain way. Interesting.

you're gonna be saying your kids name 24/7 saying dhiblaaawe everytime you're calling your kid is a mission,I would personally stick to the classicis like liban ,sharmake,,rooble ,hanad , faisal so on and so forth

Liban, Sharmaarke, Rooble, and Hanad are Somali names while Faisal is Arabic. So ur not against Somali names ur just against the ones u find difficult to pronounce? That's fine, just stick to the easy ones but make sure u make a distinction between Arabic and Somali names which u didn't in ur list here.

Fantastic names. :salute: There are too many I don't know I gotta enlist some help from relatives for the translations.

Names like Hurre and Qaybdiid are rather funny. The former being another name for madow and the later meaning refusing to share (fairly?). It's also quite funny how we have many more names for madow people :russ: Huruseh, Malow, Magad for example.

These days I noticed that a number of young Somali couples are giving their kids authentic Somali names. I got a few nieces and nephews with proper names, hopefully it will catch on.

Australia saxib. The ones with authentic names are generally the girls more than the boys. prophets names are still very popular. But yea, it isn't too many but there are some.

Where did the hype to add 'iina' after female names come from? I've seen lots of ubaxiina, amaliina, and nonsense like that on social media

It's usually followed by mamita :ohlord:

This is a good list waxan rajanaya inaan istacmalo mar dhow. Everybody in my family has Somali names. Aabe has an Aw in his name as well. :icon lol:

Planning on naming my future son Sharmarke :denzelnigga: I agree though, we should use Somali names more often, but people think they'll be closer to the deen if they use Arabic names for some reason.

Ps how is Falis pronounced? Looks like a nice name.

Isniino is a beautiful female name.

Yeah I agree its nice, but it's from the day of the week 'isniin' which is from th Arabic 'ithniin'. In my list I included only those names that are Cushitic in origin and excluded Arabic names that have been Somalized, such as Isniino, Faarax (from the Arabic faraxa- to be happy) etc.

Dorga and Nageeye are two male Somali names (I think) Don't know if they're on your list

Either way nice list :ehh:
