Somethings need to be acknowledged.
- Bleaching is a foreign to Somalis, its an Asian import that did not gain traction until the post civil war era.
- Nearly all foreign born and or raised Somali women (in the west) don't do it.
- Being tall, with sharp features, dark gums and a small waist was hailed as the standard of beauty for Somalis, of which lighter Somali hues were also prized but not the end all and be all. And those beauty standards are what you call culturally-specific. There has however been a recent switch over from finding thin beautiful to prefering slightly larger women (post civil war).
-Somali women were often rewarded with larger dowries if they were conventionally beautiful. And back in those days it meant something; because cosmetics were rarely used and there was no way to camouflage one's body (for enhancement) or employ strategic deception.
