I learned that’s more of a saying. Women are surprisingly quite qabil loyal. They even serve as agitators during clan warfare. There’s just something about a women’s faan that drive men mad. Women are not bastards, we have a lineage, just like men. We are not objects that belong to a man that marries us. We just don't pass on the names, but other than that, there is no difference. We are expected to support our families, and rightfully so. In Somali culture, we do pass on our names sometimes, with all the "Bah" and "Habar" names. Not to mention the clan names inspired by abtiyaal. During warfare, people even hide among their abtiyaal and even call on them for support; the famous 'Habar Wacasho' (@DR OSMAN ).

The fact that this is even a discussion is quite shocking to me. A woman has a father, a mother, brothers, uncles. Should she be loyal to a strange man she met yesterday, over her own bloodline? The only thing us women, don't do, is pass on our names, well, even that we do in Somali culture.

You do realise the wife kids are the same clan as her husband? And a mother will always have the best interest of her kids over her cousin brother uncles and tool. Somalis are sexist, no doubt about it. But at the same time, what are Somali men able to achieve without Somali women?

According to Islam and Somali custom, women are the daughters of their father, and part and parcel of their nuclear family. That nuclear family has an extended family- which falls under a clan.

A woman having children, or getting married doesn't change a thing. Do you see us carrying the names of our husbands? Or the names of our children? No, we don't. My religion is Islam, I am not the property of anyone but Allah SWT.
